Understanding Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions and Scam Resistance Among International Students

Presentation Description:

To better understand what makes international students particularly vulnerable or resistance to scams, this presentation will apply Hofstede's Cultural Dimension Theory to offer nuanced insights into why certain cultural groups are more susceptible or resistant to scams. This interactive presentation will address the current research gap to provide a theoretical understanding of scam vulnerability, and hopefully mitigate the damaging financial and psychological impact that scams have on our students.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn about scams using Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions. They will understand how cultural context may play a role in scam victimization, resistance, and vulnerability.
  • Attendees will be able to pair Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions with specific scams, and in turn identify ways to promote resistance to scam victimization.
  • Attendees will be given suggestions about how their messaging can be shaped to mitigate student financial loss.
