Evidence-based Framework to Support Student Mental Health by Licensed Clinicians

Presentation Description: The Pyramid of Support is a guide for non-mental health professionals to assess and guide programming across pre departure, in-country, and reintegration. It targets 3 levels of need: universal interventions for all learners, learners that demonstrate the need for additional supports, and learners demonstrate the need for acute management. Assessment criteria and intervention strategies are available for each level of need, and for each stage of global education experiences. Attendees will access and complete individualized curriculum guide across interactive session.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn about gaps between the evidence base of maintaining student mental health safety and stability versus current models within study abroad that center crisis management via external referrals.
  • Attendees will have increased understanding of proactive assessment and intervention model which includes tiers of mental health need, interventions, and applications across pre departure, in country settings, and upon return.
  • Across session, attendees will design applied programming based on their setting’s need and context via discussed model, examples, and curriculum, which they can take back to their home institution.
